The COIL Project
During my time at Harlaxton I had the privilege of participating in the COIL program for my Intercultural Communications class. I was put in a team with students from Romania, Japan, and Equador. We worked together to complete assignments to learn more about each other’s cultures. Through many What's app messages back and forth we managed to find a couple times to meet. During this project I was able to connect with students my age that I would never normally be able to connect with. I learned so much about the different ways we live our lives, but also how similar we all are. It was a refreshing and eye opening experience. Below are screenshots from the meetings that we had.
Our Activities
Our first big activity as a group was to create a Day in the Life video and review them together. This was my favorite assignment because we actually got to see the daily cultural differences and similarities within our videos. My group discussed how we use our time differently, specifically how we all use our free time. It ranged from working out to hanging out with friends, which was interesting. This link will lead you to my Day in the Life video.
Our next activity was to compare greetings in our different cultures. We all sent in videos of the different ways we greet other people in our countries and the “do’s and don’ts.” For our last activity we analyzed case studies of different intercultural conflicts and picked on to solve as a group.
